The purpose of a study published in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) when employed to improve bowel function and constipation-related symptoms in children. This review was based on searches from MEDLINE (PubMed) (1950-July 2015), the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) (The Cochrane Library, Issue 7, 2015), EMBASE (1980-July 2015), the Cochrane IBD Group Specialized Register, trial registries and conference proceedings, for randomized controlled trials that assessed any type of TES, administered at home or in a clinical setting. The results of this review showed that mean colonic transit rate was significantly higher in children who received TES. In conclusion, it was stated that very low quality evidence could be found, which failed to suggest that TES provides a benefit for children with chronic constipation. Thus, further randomized controlled trials assessing TES for the management of childhood constipation were proposed.
